Why this blog?

I decided to post on this blog in order to share ideas and resources to show that teaching Science through English is possible, even better if combined with Technology. During my last 3 years working as a Teacher Advisor I have seen that many teachers think of bilingual and CLIL as teaching their subject in English. Nevertheless, bilingual only works well when we use English as a device to make lessons more challenging for our students, when we teach through English, which is especifically what CLIL means. This is what I tried during my past years working as a CLIL teacher and, believe me, if CLIL is well done, it works!!!! As nowdays there is lot of controversy about how bilingualism affects the amount that students learn, as a CLIL teacher, I will adapt the contents I am teaching through English to the official curriculum and I will assess my students according to it, too. By doing so, I want to demostrate  that by using CLIL it is perfectly affordable to cover the whole curricu...

Thinking routines- How to use them

The use of Thinking routines will be an innovation in my future teaching during the year 2020-21. I have always liked them, but I was not sure how to use them properly in the classroom. That changed when I discovered, quite recently, the webpage THINKING PATHWAYS , where one can find lots of information about Think routines classified according to their goals: Introducing & exploring ideas; Synthesising & organizing ideas; Digging deeper into ideas; Giving feedback; Self-reflection). In this webpage you will find templeates, info about how to use the rotine for different activities and even videos and photos showing practical examples of how to use them. As I willbe using them in the classroom, I promise to document my teaching and shere videos and pics with everyone interested, which I will do through the instagram account: sciencetechandlanguage

About me

My name María Gómez Benito and from the 1st September 2020 on I will be working as a CLIL Biology and Geology teacher at IES La Laboral (La Rioja). Before, I have experienced many personal and profesional experiences that all together have brought me there. After highschool, I studied Biochemistry at the University of Zaragoza and got a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular and Cellular Biology at the same University. During my PhD, I had the opportunity to do an stage at the Cancer Center in Salamanca and, later on, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in both The Center for Applied Medical Reseach in Pamplona and the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI-AvL) in Amsterdam. Being a scientist changed the way I think and take challenges. It made of me a more critical and resolutive person. All in all, it has had a definitive effect on the kind of teacher I am nowadays. Although my professional career began at scientific research, in my mind I always had a dream: to become a teach...
